Of all the articles I wrote for TheFilmReview.com, Documenting the Buddhas of Aynak is probably the one I am most proud of. The article looks at American documentary film maker, Brent Huffman’s efforts to make a film about Afghan archaeologist Qadir Temori as he races against time to save a 5,000-year-old archaeological site in Afghanistan from destruction at the hands of a Chinese mining corporation.
The film, Saving Mes Aynak, went on to feature on the front page of the online edition of the New York Times… a year after I wrote my article. I interviewed a host of interesting people for the article, including a scholar of Buddhism, geologists, and of course the very helpful Brent Huffman himself. The film has since been nominated for a number of awards.
